Library Summer Internship - Historical Records Survey

HISTORICAL RECORDS SURVEY SUMMER INTERNSHIPS AT UT MARTIN

The Paul Meek Library at the University of Tennessee at Martin seeks four summer student interns. The project, supported through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, involves surveying historical records collections at a selection of cultural institutions in Tennessee’s West Grand Division, the 21 counties located between the Tennessee and Mississippi River. The survey will confirm each agency’s status and will create an institution-level summary of research collections, levels of existing staffing and budget, hours of operation, and preservation conditions for heritage materials. The goal of the project is to take the gathered information and create an online directory of cultural institutions.

Working under the supervision of the Project Director, the applicants will be employed in the form of a summer internship during the Summer 2022 semester. Working in teams of two, these positions will make visits to the institutions across the survey area, meeting with staff and volunteers, confirming information that was gathered in advance of the visit, assessing storage and preservation condition at the site, and taking promotional photographs of selected high-value documents, photographs, and objects.

Applications are open to any college or university student, and are not limited to those enrolled at UT Martin. Preference will be given to graduate students in history, administration, or museum studies programs. Each of the four positions will be paid $10 per hour, forty hours per week, over the three month internship. The internships do not include benefits beyond FICA other basic benefits. Travel will be by UT Martin vehicles with mileage paid by the grant. Students will be expected to cover their own housing and living expenses, including all meals.

The Paul Meek Library is located on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin in a rural community an hour north of Jackson, Tennessee.
